Are you a mid-level professional in community action, local government
or a non-profit agency in Ohio's Appalachian region? Are you eager to gain new
skills to help you advance into a leadership role in your organization or community?
If so, the Appalachian Leadership Academy is the professional development program
for you. The curriculum targets mid-level professionals.
The
program goals are:
• Build leadership capacity in public and non-profit organizations within
the Ohio Appalachian region.
• Equip the region's future leaders with the leadership skills necessary
to guide Ohio Appalachia through change and into a viable future.
• Motivate the future leaders of Ohio Appalachia to think strategically
about the region.
• Deepen the knowledge and understanding of the history, opportunities,
resources and challenges of the Ohio Appalachian region.
Participant Selection & Application Process
Applicants must fill out our ALA
Application [PDF 18kb], provide an updated professional resume, and obtain
signatures from his/her agency's immediate supervisor and CEO/executive director
in order to be eligible for acceptance.
The
deadline for applications for the Class of 2010 is August 14, 2009.
You will be notified shortly after your application has been received about your
acceptance status.
Estimated Costs
Tuition is $1,200 per participant. Each agency is responsible for lodging, per
diem and mileage expenses for their own participants.
The participant may elect to receive continuing education units (CEUs) from
Ohio University upon completion of the curriculum. The cost to receive CEUs
is $99.
Meeting Frequency & Location
The program will begin with a two-day retreat in September. Monthly classes
will be held through July. A closing retreat and graduation ceremony will conclude
the program during August. Class sessions will be held in different locations
throughout the Ohio Appalachian region.

Program
Format
The curriculum is based on 5 Core
Competencies: self-knowledge, visioning, human resource management, effective
communication, and effective management.
The curriculum is delivered through interactive learning sessions, small group
work, individual class work and homework, site visits, teambuilding exercises,
lectures, required outside reading, mentoring with a senior member of management,
and an individual and/or group project.
Participants are required to complete a project during the 12-month
curriculum period. This project may be completed by an individual or small group,
depending upon the size and scope of the project. Click here
